The Common Black Ant (Lasius niger) or Garden Ant create nests in gardens, under paving slabs or in foundations, they do not bite or spread disease but can become a nuisance requiring pest control when they enter buildings.
Habitat & Distribution
Found throughout Europe the Black Ant occurs very frequently in Ireland, normally close to humans. Ants have a well defined social structure and large ant nests can contain many thousand. Young queens leave the nest each year in the form of ‘flying ants’ to form new nests.
